“The arts are essential elements of education just like reading, writing, and arithmetic. Music, dance, painting, and theatre are keys that unlock profound human understanding and accomplishment. Students should be handed these keys at an early stage.” — William Bennett, former U.S. Secretary of Education
As part of an ArtsAlive! Living Learning Community service project , students are hosting a series of arts workshops held at the Winona Community Center for the children who live in the Maplewood Townhomes neighborhood.
The partnership started in December with a holiday crafts workshop in which children created a variety of Christmas and winter-themed projects including reindeer, snowflakes, and Christmas cards and decorated their own sugar cookies.
February’s event was a painting workshop, and the March workshop will focus on imagination through theatre; the April theme is yet to be announced.
Janet Heukeshoven (Music) and Lisa Truax (Art) are the faculty advisers for the LLC. The students in ArtsAlive! are all Saint Mary’s freshmen with a variety of academic majors who share a common passion for the arts.
